First Round of the Andalucia League for Irish Football in Marbella

Results from Saturday the 18th – Andalucía League – GAA – Marbella |Seville |Gibraltar

A hot afternoon at Marbella Rugby Club last Saturday saw Marbella, Seville and Gibraltar meet for the first game of the season of the Irish Football (Gaelic) League. Some relief was provided by light clouds but not for long as the football soon took over and the intensity increased. Marbella began against a Seville team that held some new faces and both teams battled for the first half to find a foothold and gain an advantage to no avail. A second half saw Marbella achieve a well placed goal that revitalised the effort and helped them pull ahead to the final whistle leaving them 3 points clear.

costagaels-2014-squadThe next match featured Marbella again against Gibraltar who took the field with a strong panel and fresh legs and the first half was tough for both sides as an entrenched Marbella battled against fatigue to hold which they managed with the score at half time being 03-04 putting Gibraltar ahead by 1 point. The second half was to prove the decider for Marbella however as the half passed Gibraltar grew in strength and eventually left Marbella behind with a convincing win.

The final game saw Seville, having rested somewhat, take on a now freshly blooded Gibraltar, and again, the first half proved to be a struggle for any side to pull ahead to any degree. The second half was again to show in Gibraltar’s favour as they edged ahead eventually pulling clear with a solid 4 point lead.

All in all an excellent days football and all the clubs would like to thank Marbella Rugby Club for hosting us and Seamus Whooley of golfexperience.net for his unbiased and free flowing refereeing!

Gaelic football season in Spain kicks off in style!

Marbella Rugby Club played host last weekend to an inaugural Gaelic football tournament to launch the 2013/14 Andalucian league. Hosted by the Marbella-based Costa Gaels, teams from Gibraltar and Seville traveled to take part in the friendly tournament that saw the sides swap and share players in the amiable spirit of the tournament.

The bleachers at Marbella Rugby Club were packed with families, friends and spectators who were treated to an energetic and skillful display of Gaelic footballing skills. A BBQ followed the matches before the teams inevitably moved on to various Irish bars along the coast!

The Costa Gaels – newly sponsored by Biddy Mulligan’s Irish Bar in La Cala de Mijas – will kick off this year’s Andalucian GAA League by travelling away to Seville on November 16th. A tough pre-season training schedule and an influx of new players puts the Costa Gaels in prime position to take down this year’s trophy.

Not surprising given the international aspect of the Costa del Sol, the Costa Gaels have the most eclectic group of players of all the Andalucian teams. Players from Ireland, the UK, Holland, Spain and Iraq make up the side, and the team is looking forward to a successful season this year.

Costa Gaels host friendly tournament in Marbella Rugby Club!

Hot on the heels of a sensational Gaelic football season that’s just wrapped up back home, a sunnier, smaller, and potentially just-as-sensational season is about to kick off in southern Spain.

Marbella’s Costa Gaels are back – bigger, bolder, fitter, stronger and faster – and will be hosting an inaugural Andalucian tournament to launch this year’s Gaelic football league in sunny Spain.

The Costa Gaels will be joined once again by teams from Seville and Gibraltar for the southern league, but this year may see the introduction of two new fledgling GAA teams from Cordoba and Granada.

While it’s still early days for these developing clubs, a big welcome is extended to both teams and it’s hoped that they can make it to next week’s Marbella tournament. An expanded league with more teams would give a great boost to the game in Spain, and extend the number of teams in the country to 17.

Marbella Rugby Club will host the Irish football tournament on October 19th, with games starting at 2pm and continuing until around 6pm. There’ll be a tasty BBQ available during the games and afterwards and – more importantly – the clubhouse bar will be open all day long to cater for the thirst requirements of friends, families, spectators and players alike. All are welcome and it promises to be a great day out.

Marbella’s Costa Gaels are raring to go following a tough pre-season training schedule and promise to make their new sponsors – Biddy Mulligans Irish Bar in La Cala de Mijas – and their fantastic adopted home – Marbella Rugby Club – proud in what promises to be an exciting season.

Also, the Costa Gaels has recently begun its juvenile club and is initially offering FREE training for children, boys and girls, from 4 years old to 14 years old on Wednesday evenings at 7pm – 8pm and Sunday mornings from 11am to midday in the Marbella Rugby grounds – feel free to come along!

See you on October 19th!!

Paddy’s Day!

leprechaun-feature

Amidst all the Irish madness that is promised with Marbella’s first annual St Patrick’s Day Festival, the Costa Gaels will be demonstrating to all and sundry just what Gaelic football is all about. On March 17th the team will be holding an exhibition match on the beach just next to Marbella’s Puerto Deportivo, as part of the planned festivities. With so much pedestrian traffic on the paseo, and with the numerous tents and attractions that will form part of the Paddy’s Day celebrations drawing tourists and passers-by to the port, thousands of people will get the opportunity to see a bunch of sun-burned Paddy’s kicking a ball around while they enjoy their Guinness and munch on special Irish tapas. The Costa Gaels are inviting anybody to join in and try out for themselves of one of Ireland’s favourite sports. Kids are especially welcome to take part, and it is hoped that the Paddy’s Day exhibition match will attract a few more players to join the team.
